For me, learning to ski was a long adventure. As a kid, I pizza-ed my way down the bunny hill runs of Massanutten Mountain in Virginia, but never really got the hang of those slippery skis. Luckily, I had another chance twenty years later to learn the sport from a different angle. Some new friends took me out for a sunrise ski through the woods of Maine in fresh powder. I was hooked.
Remember the first time you ever skied? Most winter enthusiasts have a story about how they fell in love with skiing (or snowboarding, split-boarding, etc.) This upcoming winter, 30 kids are going to get the chance to ski for the first time with the Catamount Ski Cubs, our youth learn-to-cross country ski program, and start to make those memories. As the Ski Cubs program coordinator, I’m incredibly excited to dive in and start the process that leads many people down the road to a lifetime of winter enjoyment.
Now, the thing about Ski Cubs is….we need your help to make it happen! Ski Cubs needs volunteer instructors on Saturday mornings at Bolton Valley Nordic Center from January 17 to Feb 21, 2015. Volunteers help fit skis and boots, instruct the program, and ski the trails with small groups. You don’t need to be a pro–just comfortable on Nordic skis out in the winter weather for three hours. Ideally, we’d have 5-6 volunteers for each session. Volunteering at all six sessions is best, but if you can only make 2 or 3, that’s okay, too!
If this sounds like your cup of tea (or coffee), please get in touch with Andy Wood at outreach@catamounttrail.org, or call the office at 802-864-5794.
