This is a great time of year. The colors are starting to go, people are starting to think about skiing, and there are all kinds of new ski films being released! But, what’s really awesome is the increase in the number of high quality movies being released by small groups of enthusiasts. These movies might not be less polished, and there might be fewer sick airs and straight lined chutes, but the stories are arguably more interesting. One such movie is The Way Up, shot and edited by a group of Burlington dads who work hard to provide for their families, raise their kids, and still find time to chase pow!
So, take a few minutes out of your day to sit back and enjoy some local ski porn. We promise it’s not as dirty as it sounds!
Statement from the Creators:
The Way Up is the first foray into the world of feature ski films by a group of 7 friends (and dads) who chase backcountry powder before chasing kids around. Based in Burlington, VT we spent all of last season exploring the glades of the Green Mountains, the slides of the Adirondacks and the steeps and bowls of the Presidential Range. For our group, the way up is just as important as the way down – for many of us it’s the only time during the week that we truly have to ourselves and the value we get from the experience goes far deeper than just the satisfaction of getting first tracks on deep days.
The Catamount Trail and it’s stewardship of the backcountry here in Vermont played an important supporting role in the film. Much of the footage we shot in Vermont was from zones either on or immediately adjacent to the trail; the hills around Camel’s Hump and Bolton in particular. We’re all big fans and supporters of the Catamount Trail and all the organization does to promote the backcountry experience.
Filmed over the course of the 2014-15 season, ‘The Way Up’ is an authentic look at what the backcountry means to the everyday enthusiast.
