PARKING NOTICE:
The parking location at the south end of Section 21 has changed. Skiers should no longer park on Pineo Brook Road. Skiers should park in the parking lot at “The Driving Range“, a collaborative parking area to access the trail networks in this area. To access the Catamount Trail, cross the field on skis and parking lot head toward the solar panels. A Google Maps link to the parking area can be found HERE.
The parking location at the north end of Section 21 has also changed due to a reroute around Joiner Brook. Please park in the Timberline Lodge and look for the CT parking sign.
Directions to Trail:
The Timberline Lodge parking lot is 3.5 miles up the Bolton Access road. Please park at the far end of the first lot on the right. Then walk behind the 4X4 Center to find the start of the VAST trail on the opposite side of the 4X4 Center. Please be respectful of the private landowner, be cautious and give way to motorized vehicles, and be careful of the heavy machinery in this area.
The Driving Range parking lot is on Route 2. It is 6 miles west from the Waterbury exit and 1.5 miles east of the Bolton Access road.
Snapshot
This section is now almost entirely on VAST trails so can be icy hard pack depending on when last groomed. It is a lovely mostly downhill descent (if skiing north to south) with elevation change of 1,100 feet. If low snow conditions, it is safer to ski up and might require skins.
Length
6 miles
Difficulty
Southbound skiing requires intermediate to advanced skills because there are steep downhill stretches and narrow chutes. Northbound is mostly uphill especially for the first and last mile but some other scattered steep uphills as well.
Staying Found
Out in the woods keeping track of where you are can be a challenge. A map and compass is always a reliable option, but there are some great technological solutions that can make knowing where you are super simple. Please visit out Staying Found Webpage for more info about some of our favorite navigational tools, and note that all of our PDF maps are geo-referenced. This means they can be opened directly in apps like Avenza and used for navigation even in areas where there is no cell service.
Catamount Trail Skiers Facebook Group
