It happens every year. On that day we get our first snowfall-where the snow really starts to stick-people of all walks of life seem to get a case of the ‘snow joys’. For myself, and many others who choose to plant themselves in Vermont, the ‘snow joys’ can last all winter, as long as there is time and motivation to get out in the cold air and enjoy it. I have always found one of the best ways to do that is to explore the backwoods and fields on skis.
Getting new skiers out on the trail is a gratifying way to spread snow joy that can last a lifetime. Our Ski Cubs program, which introduces Burlington area youth to cross-country skiing is gearing up for another season at Bolton Valley Nordic this winter. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us Saturdays in January and February to help instruct 30 new skiers from 4th grade on up through middle school. Volunteers help organize kids into groups, fit gear, lead basic instruction, and get out and enjoy the trails in small groups!
VOLUNTEER LOGISTICS:
When: Jan. 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, 20 (plus one weather make up day Feb. 27). Volunteer commitment would be 8:30am-12:30pm.
Where: Bolton Valley Nordic Center (35 min. from Burlington and Montpelier).
Perks: A free pass for the rest of the day to Bolton’s nordic and backcountry trails and the rewarding opportunity to spread snow joy!
Ideally we are looking for people who can commit to the duration of the program, but welcome anyone willing to join us for 3 or more days. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to learn more about Ski Cubs please contact our Outreach and Youth Program Coordinator Laura Koloski, outreach@catamounttrail.org, or call her weekdays at the CTA office (802) 864-5794.
