What is Ski Cubs?
Ski Cubs is part of the youth programming provided by the Catamount Trail Association. The goal of Ski Cubs is to increase access to outdoor winter activities for Vermont’s youth. All of our programs are provided at no-cost to participants and everything is provided to participants, including: transportation, trail passes, and equipment. We strive to create community connections through nordic skiing and give students throughout Vermont an exciting way to engage with the natural world during the winter.
What types of programs do you offer?
The CTA offers tailored programs to fit each communities needs. Our flagship program, Ski Cubs, runs on Saturday mornings at Bolton Valley Nordic Center. Students from the Burlington area are invited to participate in this 6-week program. We also run multiple school programs, both during and after school, throughout Chittenden and Addison county. School programs are taught in partnership with a teacher and typically run for 6-8 weeks.
What is the curriculum?
We have developed a comprehensive curriculum over the past decade of Ski Cubs. Our 6-week curriculum goes through a gentle skills progression and is filled with games and activities to help students have fun, while learning critical nordic skiing skills. Our curriculum is designed to teach classic nordic techniques at a pace that is accessible to all levels.
What do these programs cost?
All youth programs at the CTA are provided at no-cost! Everything is included in our youth programs to increase access to the sport.
Who can participate?
Our programs are open to students in 3rd grade and up. Unfortunately, we do not have equipment sized for lower grades at this time.
Who are your instructors?
At Ski Cubs, our instructors are seasoned volunteers who have many years of nordic experience. Ski Cubs instructors are well versed in the curriculum and work hard each week to provide an enjoyable experience for your student.
How do I start a program at my school?
We would love to work with you to start a program at your school. We require an indoor space, such as a gym or empty classroom, for students to get ready, and an outdoor space that is large enough for students to ski (a playground or sports field sized area is adequate). We also require a staff member to be present to assist with programming, such as a PE teacher or classroom teacher. If you are interested in starting a new program, contact outreach@catamounttrail.org for more information.
Can I volunteer with Ski Cubs?
Yes! We have plenty of volunteer needs. Please visit our Get Involved page for more information on volunteer opportunities and to fill out a volunteer application form.
How else can I help?
We have several needs in addition to volunteering. If you have extra junior sized (130-170 cm) cross-country skis or any size boots, we can always use more equipment! We also provide winter clothing for students in need, so if you have spare gear in good condition, contact us and we can set up a donation time.
