When headed out for a day of exploring the backcountry there are a lot of things you need to bring with. And, while it may not make some people’s list, an insulated water bottle or thermos is definitely on ours. When out exploring you want to make sure that your constantly drinking. You could carry a camelback and pray that the tube doesn’t freeze up. Or you could carry an uninsulated bottle and store it upside down so that when it does freeze you can still drink out of it. Or… you can carry a water bottle what will keep your water in a drinkable form all of the time. Your choice.
The nice thing about an insulated water bottle is that not only will it keep things from not freezing… but many do a very good job of keeping things warm despite cold temperatures. If you’re cold and dragging butt… there aren’t many better things than a piping hot bottle of hot chocolate. It’ll warm you up good and proper, and the sugar will provide you with a little kick in the shorts to help you keep moving.
Some of our favorite bottles are made by Klean Kanteen and Hydro Flask.
You should check them out. In the event that an accident does happen out on the trail, having a warm drink available will go a long way to helping keep the victim comfortable, hydrated, and warm.
