The CTA Trail Fund is one of two major fundraising efforts that allow us to accomplish all of the good work we do. Contributions to the Trail Fund directly support trail maintenance activities such as bridge construction, trail segment relocation, easement acquisition, and additional work associated with maintaining, improving, and protecting the 300+ miles of the Catamount Trail. This fund also provides chapter support to expand backcountry zones and help us continue to grow and improve the recreational economy here in Vermont.

The success of the Heart of the Trail campaign will make these goals possible:
- Implement trail improvements and high-elevation backcountry zones to make backcountry skiing more climate-resilient and sustainable for generations to come. We have drainage upgrades and other climate resiliency work planned for Section 15 in the Heart of the Trail corridor this summer, which will improve the ski experience north of Blueberry Hill Inn. And a new backcountry zone has been approved for central Vermont – Old Callahan Backcountry Zone in Camel’s Hump State Park is on track to be ready this winter!
- Continue our work to fully protect the “Heart of the Trail” from Blueberry Hill to von Trapp Family Lodge and ensure permanent access to some of Vermont’s most treasured mountain landscapes, while bolstering trail protection statewide. We’ve already put campaign money to work and secured a trail easement on Section 15, and five additional trail protection projects are nearing completion!
Additional trail work in 2026 will include:
- Opening the Old Callahan Backcountry Ski zone in Camels Hump State Park.
- Several projects to improve climate resilience and facilitate year-round use on Section 7.
- Drainage work and turnpiking to improve climate resilience on Section 16.
- New bridges to improve stream crossings on Sections 20 and 21.
- Permitting work for a future reroute on Section 5 to avoid a perennially wet area.
- Project development work on three trail easements in northern Vermont.
- Seasonal maintenance on the trail and backcountry zones in the fall.
- Yearly easement monitoring on the CTA’s 48 trail easements.
