On Section 19 of the Catamount Trail, as you head north from the Battleground Condos, you cross a large bridge over Mill Brook in Fayston, VT. This bridge is very important to the Catamount Trail as it provides connectivity in an area where no other viable route exists. The bridge that previously provided access through this area began to fail and was replaced earlier this spring.
The CTA replaced the failing 30 foot long log bridge with a new 50 foot long, steel pedestrian bridge. This project maintains trail connectivity and trail access, and facilitated permanent protection of the trail and trailhead parking access through conversion of a long-term lease agreement into a permanent easement. Additionally, the new bridge will improve water quality, minimize environmental impacts on the Mill Brook watershed and ecosystem, and be less susceptible to damage during high water events.
The bridge was built utilizing recycled materials including repurposed structural I-beams. This approach helped to minimize the overall cost of the project, while still serving the needs of a wide range of winter and summer users, from Catamount Trail Skiers, snowshoers, and other backcountry explorers, to walkers, runners, and hikers. The new structure will also facilitate access for emergency services in the Phen Basin and Catamount Trail areas.
At this time the bridge is complete. And while we have secured grant funding for a significant portion of the project, we are now seeking help from the backcountry community to take us the rest of the way.
The full cost of the bridge was $55,000, and we are still $5000-10,000 short. Please consider helping us push this project across the finish line by buying a raffle ticket below.
