The CTA Trail Fund is one of two major fundraising efforts that allow us to accomplish all of the good work we do. Contributions to the Trail Fund directly support trail maintenance activities such as bridge construction, trail segment relocation, easement acquisition, and additional work associated with maintaining, improving, and protecting the 300+ miles of the Catamount Trail. This fund also provides chapter support to expand backcountry zones and help us continue to grow and improve the recreational economy here in Vermont.
Please consider donating the the Trail Fund today and help us reach our goal of $30,000 for project funding!
2025 Summer Projects:
This summer, our work will be highlighted by two major projects in the heart of the Green Mountains.
In Duxbury, CTA staff and our MRVBC chapter have collaborated to submit a final proposal to the State of Vermont for a new backcountry zone on the Old Callahan Trail, near the Monroe Trail on Camels Hump. Both the CTA and MRVBC have spent years laying the groundwork for this project, which will provide an easily accessible beginner to intermediate backcountry ski zone near Stowe, Waterbury, and the Mad River Valley.
Just north in Bolton, CTA staff and trail chiefs will be working to establish a new, permanent route for Section 21, which was heavily impacted by last summer’s flooding. A significant effort enabled a temporary reroute for skiers this past winter, and we are excited to continue working with landowners this summer to establish a permanent alignment that provides the best possible ski experience, connects all the way to the Bolton Valley Nordic Center, and creates the opportunity to permanently protect the trail corridor.
Both of these projects highlight the critical role that long-term investments, relationships with landowners, and collaboration between CTA staff and volunteers play in improving backcountry skiing access, and neither is possible without your support!
Additional 2025 projects include:
- Replacing bridges on Section 23 and the Upper Gorge Loop in Sterling Valley.
- Building a new connector trail from the Forest City parking area to Section 19 on Camels Hump, pending final approval from Vermont Forests, Parks, and Recreation.
- Continued work to improve climate resiliency and facilitate potential year-round use on Sections 5, 6, and 7.
- Submitting an initial proposal to the State for a new Backcountry Zone at Bald Hill.
- Seasonal maintenance on the trail and backcountry zones in the fall.
- Yearly easement monitoring on the CTA’s 47 trail easements.
- Continued development of trail protection projects.
- Hosting our yearly regional Trail Chiefs gatherings.
