Every August, for over a decade, the CTA has had the pleasure of sharing 4 days on the trail with UVM Service TREK.
Working in small groups of 8 TREKKIES and 2 TREK Leaders (experienced students), Service TREK participants engage in direct service while learning about the value of community involvement, leadership skills, developing great friendships, and living and working as a team. Sponsored by the University of Vermont’s Department of Student Life, Outdoor, and Leadership & Civic Engagement Programs, TREK has offered new students diverse, experiential learning opportunities that promote community building, self-discovery, and connection with future classmates for over 30 years.
This year’s “Catamount Crew,” as they refer to themselves, camped at Elmore State Park and spent their days working on the northern reaches of the Catamount Trail. They installed culverts, weed-whacked 5-foot-tall brush, hauled lumber, built a couple small bridges, and lopped and sawed branches obstructing the trail with new found expertise.
Thank you Service Trek, for another great year on the trail. The list of projects you’ve helped us accomplish over the years is sizeable, and the positive attitudes and love of service you bring to the trail set a fine example for others to follow. See you next year!
