Stump Sprouts Ski Touring Center
Hawley, MA.
Lloyd’s glades were cut by proprietor Lloyd Crawford and friends in the early 2000’s to add some steeper terrain for skiing off the height-of-the-land at Stump Sprouts. Unfortunately, immediately after completing the project, the massive ice storm of 2008 hit in early December crippling skiable terrain at elevation throughout New England. The storm made such a mess of their work that Lloyd and friends had no choice but to abandon the project. In 2024, WMass Backcountry Alliance began a conversation with Lloyd and Suzanne Crawford about reclaiming the two original backcountry ski trails and providing access for public recreation. Partnering with the Crawfords, WMass Backcountry Alliance will begin a trail work schedule to improve access for SAR (Search and Rescue) responders, to maintain the dedicated uphill skin track, and to clear the two alpine backcountry ski trails descending off the north/northeast corner of the property.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This zone is currently NOT open to the public for backcountry skiing.
We will be posting scheduled work days on our website for volunteers to help throughout the Summer and Fall 2025.
