It’s always good to get out on the Catamount Trail, especially midweek! Thanks to the hard work of CTA members and volunteers from Keurig Green Mountain, Section 17 is ready to rock and roll for another winter of backcountry skiing.
Our project for the day required a hike through Green Mountain National Forest and several adjacent properties. Here, the Catamount Trail zigs and zags through recently logged parcels of forest, along snowmobile trails, across fields, and through old homesteaded land. Our Trail Chief, Dean, had already passed through to chainsaw blowdowns, so we focused on trimming brush and branches along the trail.
Most of the leaves were down, giving us great views of the surrounding mountains. We also encountered evidence of black bears, including claw marks up a beech tree, and broken branches up high in apple trees. Unfortunately (or fortunately), we didn’t catch any bears in the act.
Near French Settlement Road we met a herd of friendly goats. Maybe next time we clear the trail, we can enlist their help!
