Stowe is the classically charming village in the Green Mountains with Vermont’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield. It is a ski history legend. Unlike many places in Vermont, its history does not center exclusively around farming and lumber. By the mid-1800’s Stowe had developed into a famous summer resort due to its transportation connections and spectacular scenery. In fact, the Toll Road to the Top of Mount Mansfield was finished in 1870. Stowe can be considered the birthplace of downhill skiing in the U.S. (though Woodstock might dispute that!), and its first ski trails were cut in Stowe’s Ranch Valley in the 1930’s. Before downhill skiing as we know it was event invented, Stowe was the location of the first hearty skiers in the U.S. who spent half the day climbing up Mount Mansfield and the remainder skiing down. When you are not cross country skiing in Stowe, you can visit the Vermont Ski Museum right in the heart of town.
Stowe is blessed with an interconnected network of cross country ski trails. On this trip you will spend two nights outside the village and the last night in the village soaking up Stowe’s New England charm. On Friday, February 5 you’ll overnight in the Stowe Motel & Snowdrift Inn after joining your CTA friends for a guided ski tour of the Beaver Meadow Loop in Morristown. The second group adventure will take place on Saturday, February 6 when you will be shuttled to Edson Hill Touring Center for a ski on CT Section 23 through the historic Ranch Valley, ending up at the legendary Trapp Family Lodge. You’ll overnight in Stowe Motel & Snowdrift again tonight. On Sunday, February 7 you’ll ski Section 24 from the Ryder Brook Golf Club to Edson Hill Manor and will spend the night in the heart of Stowe in the historic Green Mountain Inn. Monday, February 8 will be a half day ski on the Marston Trail before returning home. The specific day by day itinerary is:
